We went to Hakuba this year as well. 14 students from our school participated. I’m going to show you how the camp is.
1st day
Departed from Nagoya Station at 8:00 a.m.
This time, not only our school but also other two school members went to Hakuba together from Nagoya!
On the train, students became fast friends!
The native staff members were the same as last year.
Almost all of the Sunny English students attending this year’s camp had attended last year’s camp and strongly wanted to see the staff members again! The students were delighted to see them again!
Self-introduction time!
Students changed groups several times so they had many opportunities to introduce themselves!
Unlike the self-introduction presentations we do in the classroom, this was a situation where they really introduce themselves. This was the great experience of actually using English.
Group Activity
During the camp, students were divided into six groups.
Each group discussed and decided on a group name and a group leader.
It takes courage to be a leader and share own opinions.
This is the kind of opportunity that they can experience in the camp.
After lunch, the students went outside for the activities.
After activities, there is a lot to do!
・Dinner time
・Announcement of the room assignment (This was probably the most interesting thing! )
・Bath time
Laying out a Japanese-style futon was difficult!
Time to reflect
Each student looked back at himself/herself and set goals for the next day.
・What I was able to do and what I was not able to do
・What I want to do tomorrow?
Of course, they also had this reflection time on the second night.
Time to sort out the feelings is very important.
2nd day
Wake-up time was 6:30.
Probably everyone got up earlier than that time, but they kept the rule that they must not get out of the room before 6:30 and no one did so! Great!
Lake activity
For most of the students, this was definitely the most exciting activity!
They had so much fun on the boat!
From the lakeside, it was hard to see what everyone was doing, but when I saw the happy smiles on everyone’s faces when they came back to the lakeside, I knew they had a great time.
Some of the students jumped off the boat into the lake! They said to me, “It was a little scary, but a lot of fun!” Thye had big smile on their faces.
Lunch time
The menu was different from what we Japanese usually eat! The taste was a little strange, but that’s what makes it interesting!
Activity: Get 21!(should be‥‥)
This is a game which each group have to think of a ranking of a certain theme and score 21 points!
‥‥Sorry for the poor explanation.
Anyway, it is an exciting game! It is a good opportunity to strengthen teamwork!
Activity: Who am I!?
This is a game someone pretends to be something (stapler, gorilla, ice cream, whatever).
I pretended to be a table tennis racket.
I got lots of questions from the students.
Q: How big?
Q: Where do you live?
Q: What color are you?
and so on.
It was fun to see their puzzled faces!
BBQ
When Japanese people think of BBQ, they probably imagine something different from these pictures.
But this hamburger is what BBQ is in other countries.
An unexpected experience that we have never had is truly wonderful! And it will be a great memory for them.
Talent Show
This is another really big and exciting event in this camp!
Not everyone has to show something. Just those who want to show something go in front of everyone and show something!
Movie night
Time to watch a movie in English!
We all discussed and chose a movie together.
And this time we watched “Minion!”
The last day
2nd day was a hard day!
I know it was hard for some students to get up on time on the last day!
But…
The day started!
Last day of the camp!
It was presentation day!
Preparation time!
Prepare presentation drafts with group members.
Presentation!!
It’s nothing special for Sunny students because they experience speeches like that all the time!
Even so, I know that presenting in front of a large audience is a challenge for them! Everyone did their best!
I was especially happy to see that the students who participated last year were clearly more relaxed in their presentations than last year!
Award time
・ Group award
・ Individual award
Message exchange
This is also my favorite time!
They handed friends message cards with their feelings written on them.
They all became really good friends through this camp
During this camp, we saw many children enjoying conversation with the foreign staff!
I had a very nice time with everyone this year too! Everyone is really nice! Thank you!
